Labels and Labeling

SST does not label shipments; therefore we do not produce labels for hazardous materials.

Each shipper of freight that SST handles is required to attach any applicable labeling to their shipments prior to introducing them into the SST system. While there are numerous labeling systems, there are a few labels that tend to be the most popular among our shippers.

At SST, the only system that must be adhered to is the DOT system. We will discuss this and some of the other more popular systems.

NMIG Labeling

The NMIG  system was developed by the National Paint and Coatings Association to help workers better determine specific hazards of the chemicals produced by the paint and coatings industry.

As pictured below, this label is based on a four color system with Red for fire hazard, Blue for health hazard, Yellow for reactivity and White for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Also shown are the various requirements for PPE.
