Safe Work Methods Training

Proper Lift/Lower and Push/Pull - continued

  1. Test the Weight. This step allows your mind to prepare for the weight you are about to move. By sliding, tilting, rotating or partially lifting the object you give your mind the opportunity to prepare for applying the right amount of force to move the object. It helps eliminate any surprise that could lead to an injury and keeps you from over-stressing if the object is too heavy for you to move.

  2. Lift With a Smooth Motion. Much like jerking on a car tow strap can snap it in half, sudden movements while lifting or lowering can cause damage to muscles and tendons. Muscles can become torn and tendons can actually be ruptured from their attachments to the bone. Intervertebral disks can be bulged or herniated as well.

The best course of action while lifting/lowering or pushing/pulling is to use a smooth motion that applies effort gradually.
