Employee Training - Continued
For example, how to detect the accidental release of the chemicals in use, the chemical specific
exposure hazards like skin irritation, lung damage, etc. and how to use the information contained in an SDS for first
aid treatment or spill response. It also covers what to do in case of fire or a reaction of the chemical or chemicals
in use.
This training also includes information on non-routine tasks such as single event chemical
use. It includes proper safe work practices for the new chemical, how to properly protect one’s self and what to do
in case of an emergency. This would be like one-time use events where an employee may use a chemical for the first
time for system maintenance or cleaning that normally does not happen. This in depth training takes place as the need
arises.
Some additional methods for properly handling/using hazardous chemicals include:
- Remove Jewelry Before Handling Chemicals.
- Use Face/Splash Guards and Eye Protection.
- Wash Hands After Handling Chemicals, Especially Before Eating or Drinking.
- Do NOT Eat, Drink or Smoke in Areas Where Chemicals are in Use.
- Use Proper Disposal Methods.
- Followed Designated Spill Response Procedures Should There be a Spill.
- Properly Decontaminate PPE for Storage.
