Secondary Containers

Many chemicals are purchased/stored in bulk which necessitates using a smaller container for application on the job.

For example, SST purchases oil in bulk but it needs to be transferred to a smaller container in order to put it in the engine of a tractor.

When chemicals are transferred to a “secondary” container, the label information must also be applied to the new container. This is necessary to prevent “unidentifiable” chemicals in unmarked containers.

These secondary labels must show the chemical name of the product in the container as well as its hazards and emergency first aid procedures.

There is an exemption from this required secondary container labeling. If chemicals are transferred to a secondary container and the container will be emptied by the end of the shift when it was transferred, it does not need to be labeled.
