HazCom Training

Course Objectives

In 1983 OSHA established the Hazard Communication (HazCom) standard as a response to the numerous employee injuries and illnesses related to exposure to hazardous chemicals in the work place.

This standard, known as the “Right to Know” law was created to protect employees through providing information regarding the hazards associated with the use of chemicals in the work place. It states that employees have the “Right to Know” about the hazards of any chemicals they may use over the course of performing their jobs.

Recently, OSHA updated HazCom to reflect changes brought about through the Global Harmonization System (GHS) which was developed through the United Nations efforts to universalize the identification, handling and transportation of chemicals around the world. One of the goals of GHS is to increase the employee understanding of hazardous chemicals they use. To reflect this increased effort to provide greater employee understanding the HazCom standard is now referred to as “The Right to Understand” law.

This training will educate SST employees about the HazCom standard, its purpose and scope. It will also provide an understanding of the chemicals used here at SST including proper use and storage. Lastly, it will provide an understanding of the Global Harmonization System of labeling.
